DEXA Scan Houston

What is a DEXA Body Composition Scan?

With so many options available for measuring body fat, why choose a DEXA body composition scan? We chose DEXA Scan for body composition analysis because it is the gold standard in body composition testing. No other method comes close to DEXA accuracy. Rather than using estimates and equations based on localized parts of your body, Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA or DXA) measures the precise amount of skeletal, muscle, and body fat mass in every part of your body. This is done by passing a very weak x-ray beam through your body and processing the results with specialized software. After your DEXA scan, we’ll explain your results and you’ll receive a thorough report with metrics within minutes. Use your results to fine tune your goals, track your progress, tailor your nutrition, identify muscle imbalances, and monitor health risks.

DEXA body composition scans are done fully clothed and can be done on a lunch break. It is significantly more precise than bio-impedance (like Inbody) and much more convenient than hydro-static weighing or BodPod. A DEXA scan measures body tissues to within 1/10 of an ounce and is the only method available to measure body symmetry and visceral fat and to provide a high-resolution image that allows you to clearly see your body composition.

DEXA Scan body composition analysis is a great option for:

  • anyone working to lose body fat or gain muscle
  • as a key health marker in addition to your annual physical
  • athletes interested in monitoring muscle symmetry, muscle atrophy after an injury, or muscle gain during recovery.
  • people transforming body physique, such as bodybuilding and bikini competitors.
  • men and women taking that want to be proactive about health, longevity and disease risk factors.

Why do I need a DEXA Body Composition Scan?

You can’t monitor what you don’t measure! DEXA body composition scans are a foundational tool in sports physiology. Professional, college and Olympic athletes have used DEXA scans for years to accurately know what their bodies are made of and now we have affordably brought this powerful technology to the public.

DEXA is now recently being used in functional medicine and obesity clinics to provide critical insight to treatment and weight loss plans and more importantly, track how those plans are working.  DEXA technology provides the most accurate body composition analysis available saving both time and error in measuring your body’s key metrics. The precise visibility, tracking and calculation of your body allows us to create custom nutrition and training plans.

Online calculators, trainers and other nutritionist use your height and weight to make a guess about how much body fat, muscle and bone tissue you have to try and predict what your calories and macro-nutrients should be. Live Lean Rx Houston uses your real, not estimated, data to create personalized nutrition, health and weight loss plans for YOU.

What are you made of?

Your DEXA body composition scan will measure:

  • Total and Regional Body Fat
Your full DEXA body composition scan report will include the total pounds of body fat and the body fat percentage of your entire body. Your results will also show your body fat across five body segments: your arms, legs, trunk, android (waist) and gynoid (hip) regions. We provide this data because your health risks increase depending on how much body fat you have and where exactly you carry the fat tissue on your body.
  • Visceral Adipose Tissue (VAT)
Visceral fat is the fat inside your abdominal cavity that coats vital organs. Even in a person with a healthy body weight, a high amount of visceral fat increases the risk of health issues like type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and heart disease. Your DEXA report will tell you how many pounds of visceral fat you have and the volume of your visceral fat to help you determine your risk level. Repeating your DEXA scan will help you monitor your visceral fat as you work to decrease it with diet and exercise.
  • Total and Regional Muscle Mass
Your DEXA scan report will tell you your total amount of lean muscle and the amount of lean muscle you have across the five segments of your body: arms, legs, trunk, android (waist), and gynoid (hip) regions. This will include your skeletal muscle, which are muscles that move your body like your biceps and hamstrings, and the smooth and cardiac muscle that makes up your internal organs. DEXA is considered the Gold Standard in body composition measurement and can tell accurately tell you how much muscle you’re made of. These precise measurements help you to fine tune your nutrition planning for the best results.
  • Bone Content and Bone Density
As we age, we can slowly lose bone mass. A healthy diet and strength training can help you maintain strong bones. DEXA technology was originally created to measure bone density in healthcare settings and bone densitometry is the most common use of DEXA scanners. In a bone densitometry scan, a physician can use your Bone Mineral Density (BMD) value to diagnose osteopenia or osteoporosis. While our DEXA is designed for these screenings, our software is designed to measure body composition. Your DEXA body composition scan report will include a BMD value but we recommend you speak to your physician or healthcare provider to request a medical bone density test.
  • Body Symmetry
Body Symmetry is more important than you may realize! Some muscle asymmetry across your right and left sides is normal but significant asymmetry can leave you at higher risk for injuries. Asymmetry can result from improper training techniques, injuries, or sports that are likely to develop right- or left-sided dominance, like golf, hockey, or martial arts. Your DEXA report will include a complete analysis of your muscle symmetry in your arms and legs, which you can use to adjust your training plan for maximum results.
  • Trends Over Time
If you’re working towards a fitness goal then your body is probably changing! Your DEXA report will let you track your trend over time with graphs and images. Monitor how your body mass and composition changes over time to verify the effectiveness of your nutrition and workout plans.

Yes. We have appointments available Tuesday through Saturday. Can’t find an appointment time online? Give us a call at 281-241-7125.

The weight limit of our GE Lunar DEXA scanner is 350 pounds. Please call us at 281-241-7125 if you have any concerns about fitting on the scanner.

Wear whatever you choose, from work clothes, gym attire to everyday casual, it’s X-ray and will not affect the scan. You will scan fully clothed and will only be asked to empty contents of your pockets, remove your shoes and heavy metal jewelry, watches and other objects. Brassieres with underwires are not an issue either.

You can if you want to, but it’s not necessary. Do avoid a heavy meal or heavy workout right before coming in. We also recommend that however you come in, come in the same way for subsequent follow-up scans for consistency and greatest accuracy.

How often you repeat your DEXA scan depends on your goals. If have a large amount of body fat to lose, then we recommend retesting every 2-3 months to monitor your progress and to allow you to adjust your weight loss program as needed. If you are lean and want to monitor your muscle maintenance or growth, then we recommend you retest at least every 6 months. Competitive bodybuilders often retest every 4-6 weeks during contest prep.

No. Many gyms and supplement shops have machines to estimate body fat using bioimpedance, such as an InBody. These machines estimate your body composition but they are heavily influenced by levels of hydration, recent activity, and your meals. While these may be adequate for monitoring a trend, they are far less accurate than a DEXA scan. DEXA is considered the Gold Standard in body composition testing.

We may be able to see your metal implants on your DEXA scan and will be interpreted as bone. This will be consistent from scan to scan so you can monitor how your bone mass is changing over time. Breast implants appear in white on your scan images. This may be interpreted as a very slightly elevated percentage of lean tissue mass and/or fat tissue mass. impact on your results will depend on the type of implants you have. You can trust the validity of your scan comparisons as long as you keep the same breast implants. We recommend a new baseline DEXA scan if you get new breast implants or if remove your implants.

Referrals aren’t necessary. We work with our Medical Director and screen every client to ensure DEXA scans are safe and appropriate

Our GE Lunar DEXA machine is commonly used for measuring Bone Mineral Density (BMD) in clinical settings to diagnose osteopenia and osteoporosis. Your DEXA body composition report will include metrics on your BMD but it should not replace a physician-ordered DEXA scan for dual femur and AP spine imaging. We recommend you contact your physician for any concerns about bone health.
